Take Action to Support Independent Journalism
“Independent journalism is the lifeblood of Democracy. That’s why we need to take the media back!”
AMY GOODMAN
“They’re the enemy of the people. The press.”
PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP
Press freedoms in the US and abroad are under attack.
Governments consolidate power and erode democracy by controlling the press. Today, journalists in the United States face physical assaults, illegal searches and seizure, equipment damage, arrests, criminal charges, and multi-million – even billion – dollar lawsuits by deep-pocketed politicians and corporations intended to censor, intimidate, and silence their coverage.
Defunding Public Broadcasting
In January 2026, after 58 years of providing funding for locally-owned public radio and tv stations, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shuttered its doors following Congress and the Trump Administration’s elimination of federal funding for public media. The cuts have hit rural stations and those serving Indigenous communities especially hard.
Media Consolidation and Capitulation to Power
No less concerning is the increasing consolidation of media into the hands of a few multinational corporations and billionaire owners who prioritize profits above all else – even at the cost of a free press.
With the commercial media capitulating to – and too often serving – power, independent journalism that doesn't rely on government or corporate support serves as a critical source of information; increased support for those outlets is urgently needed. Steal This Story, Please! is a love letter to independent media and a rallying cry to defend it.
